What is a superbill?
A superbill is a receipt of services provided by a healthcare professional that you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement. These are provided for clients receiving services from professionals not contracted with their insurance but who have out of network benefits.
Out of network benefits means the insurance company will provide you reimbursement if the professional you are seeing is not in network with your insurance company. You can find your out of network benefits by looking at the summary of benefits through your insurance provider. This can be accessed through your insurance company’s online portal, in a hard copy of your benefits, or by calling the number on the back of your insurance card.
HOW DOES THE PROCESS WORK?
The client pays the provider fee up front at time of service. After the service is completed, the client will receive the superbill with information regarding the care received during the session. The superbill can then be submitted to your insurance alongside a claim and you will receive reimbursement for the services you have paid for.
You must still meet your deductible and pay required copays at the time of your visit. Additionally, the amount you are reimbursed for the session will depend on your out of network coverage. Talk with your insurance company and desired provider to determine how much you will be reimbursed and if this is appropriate for you.
